Cottage makeovers

Rearranged and deep cleaned the whole kitchen to this sign (which Mom gave me for my birthday) would be the first thing you see when you come in the kitchen door.

Hallway:
Yowza!

Kids room:

Voila!

Lisa gave me some decorations after her wedding and I made this princess throne canopy for Darcy's bed.

His and hers closets with a common area in between.

Master Bedroom:

It's pink before and pink after, but believe me in person there is a big difference.

The view from my bedroom window. I have a weird window that actually opens onto the porch, but the porch is basically all windows, so I still get natural light and a great view of my hydrangeas and the lake. Although you can't tell here, my window is freshly painted white!

Dr Who rag quilt

A long time ago (3 years +...) I cut out many purple, mauve and white squares to make a quilt for my Goddaughter, whose favorite color was purple. Since then her favorite color has changed to blue and she is quite taken with the new Dr. Who show. Dr. Who's tardis (time-travelling phone booth) is blue, so...

Here's my plan for one side of the quilt.

Since I already had many purple and mauve squares, I used them on the other side.

During March break I started sandwiching Side A + batting + coresponding Side B square and piling them up in rows. 15 rows in all. Then I started quilting an X into each square and again piling them up to be sewn together into rows. I knew I had to really get ahead as once I was at the lake for the summer I would not have the sewing machine and Amelia's birthday is mid-summer. Well, I got about 4 rows done before the mad end-of-the-school-year rush.

Then we went to the lake for the June long weekend and just stayed. Charla happened to mention that Amelia's party had been moved up one week. Say what? OMG! so I spent a few long days and nights out at the house with Darcy as my helper, sewing rows and then sewing rows together. Once it was all put together, I brought it to the lake to do the ragging. Did I mention I did this the night before the party? I was praying I wouldn't snip a stitch by accident! I had one little snip to hand sew the next morning, as at 3:00 a.m. when I finished, I didn't trust myself to sew properly.

Here it is:

The purple side has a big A and F for her initials. And the other quarters are like mini patchwork quilts. I specially designed the middle square to mimic the gray cross on the quilt. That one square has 9 pieces.

The tardis!!

It is big enough for a bed spread for a double bed. I didn't plan on making such a big quilt, but I had to have enough rows and columns to make the tardis. The tardis had to have rectangular windows and had to have two columns of 4. I tried designing it with square windows and it really didn't look right.

Tribute to Tigger (June 21, 2016)

Cancer sucks, even for pets!

I noticed a sore on Tigger's lip mid-May.

I know he fights with his brother and gets little scabs, so I didn't think anything of it. He was acting normal. At that time I was really in end-of-the-school-year crunch. There were field trips to prepare for for both kids, Girl Guide outings, field trips for my own class, opening the cottage, my gardening clients to take care of, the closing ceremony movie to make for preschool, not to mention the daily grind of a family of 4 and my 2 normal jobs at school. So... by June 21, my last day of work at school, and Tigger was getting worse, I took him to the vet.

He looks perfectly adorable, but the left side of his face was slightly swollen.

The vet examined him and diagnosed the big C...cancer. Wide spread cancer. OMG! The vet and I agreed that for a 16 year old cat it did not make sense to do invasive and costly treatments.

To make matters worse, Darcy had not been feeling well when I finished preschool, so I picked her up and she was with me at the vet. She heard the diagnosis and the prognosis that without treatment Tigger has at best a few months to live. The poor child was devastated. I forced myself to be strong for her and managed to keep my tears at bay until later that day.

On June 23 I brought Tiggie up to the lake, his favourite place. He was allowed to drink lake water out of the bathtub and roam around outside, with supervision.

June 26, Danny and Tiggie

July 5, the swelling is more noticable.

You can see the raw-looking skin here. By this time I could feel lumps in his neck. The tumours were growing very quickly.

Brothers, July 10 (Kevin and my Anniversary, by the way. 9 years!). The bump is bigger and moving down his neck making his voice change.

July 12, Tiggie watching Darcy in HIS bathtub. He was not having a good day. I had to put his food bowl in the bathtub to get him to eat a bit.

Tigger jumped off the living room chair to come and eat, but some how landed on or tripped on a doll stroller. Then he was mad at me, ran away from me with his mouth bleeding and refused to eat. He finally ate some cheese and some left over fish, which he loved. I was worried it would make him sick, but at this point I figured I might as well spoil him.

I sat on the couch and he came and lay down next to me and purred. I was so relieved he wasn't shying away anymore. I treasured the moment knowing there wouldn't be many more.

It is so hard to have the responsibility to choose the day that will be his last. I knew it would be any day, but how would I pick a day?? Waiting too long meant letting him suffer, but what if I cut his life short?

July 13: enjoying a drink in the tub.

July 13: you can really see his face is misshapen now. My poor baby. He stopped eating today and hid under the bed, which he never does. Both are signs the vet told me to watch for, signs of distress and failing health. I made the dreaded call today.

I slept on the couch with Tigger when ever he wasn't in the bathtub.

July 14: his last walk outside.

Today is the day. Mom drove, I held Tigger on my lap. His last car ride was a good one for him. He was always a bad traveller, throwing up, drooling, pooping. Not today! He sat/lay on my lap and was quite content. So content I questioned my decision, but I knew it was only a matter of a day or two and I did not want him to suffer any more.

Darcy and Cameron came along, too. Cameron has had Tigger in his life since he was 3 - 9 years! For Darcy, she's had him her whole life. It was a hard day for all of us.

The vet reassured me that I was doing the right thing. I was with Tigger and they allowed Mom, Darcy, Cameron and I some time alone with him afterwards. Some time to collect ourselves before having to walk out through the waiting room. We brought Tigger straight to Bum's house where Cameron and Bum gave him a proper burial. I made a little marker out of stones. May he rest in peace and chase an endless string in heaven.

The next day Darcy altered the note I always leave on the door:

I am writing this in September, more than 2 months later, and we really miss him. Darcy was sad to come back home from the cottage and not have Tigger to bring home. I was too! Even Kevin misses him in his way. Eric (his brother cat) is in mourning. He was always a meek, quiet cat and now he caterwauls many times a day. I figure he is calling out to Tigger, looking for him. He was already an affectionate cat, but he seeks even more attention now. We have adjusted to not having Tigger always on the back of the couch to pat as we walk by. Darcy and I have gotten used to not having Tigger join us for story time at bedtime. We have Ollie at the house, too. He is a good companion, too.

May 14, 2016

Just another Saturday night...without hot water. Yup, our hot water tank finally gave up tonight, just what we needed. Kevin is just starting to get some work, after being laid off for over 6 months and I M getting less work and then this.  We can't ever just have smooth sailing for a few weeks...

Thankfully Mom to the rescue! She had a good, nearly new tank in her basement which we could have  immediately and for a very good price. As a bonus Darcy got to stay at Nanna's for a sleepover when we went to get the tank.

We got up there, tank out of the basement and loaded into the back of pick up by 8:30 only to discover we locked the keys in the truck. Oh, but I had a spare key in my purse! My purse was in the truck. Which was locked. Really???

We managed to keep cool and figure out a way to break in without actually breaking anything.

Then home to install our new tank.

A lovely place to work!

We were still luckier than the last guy:

Me vs hornets

August 23, 2016

Oh the joy of cottage life...I needed to get my septic tank emptied and they said they may come today. This meant digging up about a foot of earth and two layers of wood to get to the cover.

After a couple of shovelfuls, I rolled over an old log and found a hornets nest.

Me Vs. The hornets:

I succeeded!

He got a second one that day, too.

Opening the cottage 2016

April 25, 2016: First time in the cottage this year. Ice still on lake.
Dead mouse in the toilet...2 dead mice, actually!

May 9, 2016: Made the beds.
Master bedroom

Lakeside stairs...some damage from shifting posts under the house.

You can see the slant to the posts. Hhmmm...no wonder we call the cottage the Slanty Shanty.

The floating wharf is not in yet. The solid wharf is looking a little wonky.

The bunk house all set up for Cam (or guests)

Pearl Jam for Mother's Day 2016

Kevin and I don't buy each other Christmas, birthday, Mother's Day or Father's Day gifts. Instead, once in a while we gomout for a nice meal, a movie or THIS:
This was pur bug gift tonesch other this year and as a bonus, it was on Mother's Day. I spent time with Darcy and my mom earlier in the day and then an eveninv being serenaded by Eddie Vedder.

Kevin and I waiting for this much anticipated concert to start. For Kevin, this is his number 1 band, but his second time seeing them. For me, I have loved this band since I was about 17, and they are probably my number 2 band, but this is my first time seeing them.

Eddie!!

We were waaaay up, but we could see fine and the acoustics were great!!!

May 28: First weekend at the lake.

Not having our boat in the lake didn't stop us from getting a boat this weekend! Our neighbor took us out for a wee ride :-)

OMG!!!OMG!!!OMG!!!
First of all, say what!?!? Gord Downey of my all-time favorite band has BRAIN CANCER!!!!????
Second of all, I got tickets to the Ottawa show on their final tour. Final tour. Final...still can't believe this...I know he's not family, or even someone I actually know, but I feel like he is a friend. I have learned so much about him, his band and his music over the past 20+ years of listening to The Tragically hip. His voice has been in the background of so many experiences in my life. I actually took an interest in some of Canada's history because of their lyrics.

I have been to see The Hip at The Montreal Forum, at Bourbon North, at a small venue somewhere in Montreal (I think it was on St. Denis St), at the Bell Centre and soon at the Canadian Tire Centre. Each show was different and amazing...such a tight band, lots of energy and it's really about the music, not about stunts, or lights, or costume changes...about music. I can't believe this it; this is going to be the last time I see them live.

June 11 typical...gggrrrrr!!!
