Today was the last day of the March break. Darcy went to daycare and I went to a breastfeeding/birthing seminar headed by Dr. Jack Newman. I won a free seat at this seminar via Nourri-Source where I am a volunteer.
.
One of Dr. Newman's books pretty much saved me when I was breastfeeding Darcy. It was the only book that properly described the pain I was having as thrush. Once I knew what it was, I knew what to do. He was a very funny, informative speaker. The afternoon speaker focused on her work in Stockholme and how delivery and breastfeeding is approached there and brining these practices back to Quebec.
.
The expectant/new mom is not viewed as a patient (barring medical complications). The new parents have a double bed, with a small baby bed in between their pillows. There are no "aquariums" or cribs in the ward! Skin-on-skin with Mommy or Daddy is encouraged immediately and as long as the parents want, especially for premature babies. The nurse/doctor can observe the baby without removing him (again barring complications). They weigh and measure the baby when the parents are ready. Breastfeeding is initiated within 30-60 minutes of life.
.
The statistics prove that these children recover from medical issues related to being premature much more quickly than their incubated / formula-fed counterparts. Also at age 5 or 6 the breastfed children have a much healthier LDL-HDL ratio and a higher IQ! There were many, many other benefits, as well. All-in-all a fun and informative day!
