March coupons

I saved a total of $74.53 in March using coupons, Superbucks, quick sale, returning empties and bringing my own bag (Giant Tiger gives you 3 cents for each bag you bring.)

couponing!!!
Puffs (pack of 6 small boxes) on sale for $4.49-$2.00 coupon = $2.49 (42 cents/box!)
 TP $9.49 - $2.00 coupon = $7.49
 Paper towel on sale for $5.49 - $2.00 coupon = $3.49 (58 cents/roll!)
 Batteries on sale for 2/$7 - $0.75 off each = $5.50 ($2.75 each)

2013 savings
I saved a total of $668.95 in 2013 using coupons (incuding Superbucks), returning bottles buying quick-sale items and using reusable bags (Giant Tiger still gives a 3 cent credit for each reusable bag).

The downside of couponing.

I am a pain to most cashiers.

I know at Maxi after 6 coupons their cashes need a manager code, so I either keep it to 6 or less or go to cashiers that I know have the code. I also know that you must place all quick sale items with the pink sticker clearly visible, which I do, plus I watch closely. I also know they can scan the Superbucks (Maxi-gas) coupons at anytime during the transaction.  I always keep my coupon items either right at the beginning or right at the end in order to make it simpler for the cashier.  I really try to make my couponing as painless as possible for the cashier (and for me!)

Today I had 5 coupons (under the limit): 3 Superbucks, 1 for returned empties and a $1.00 Babybel coupon, which I picked up in the store.  I only had a few things, so I placed the Babybel + coupon together at the beginning and my returned bottles and Superbucks coupons together in a stack next to it. I watched the cashier pick up the coupons and put them to the side. I thought, "OK I must remember this cashier prefers to do the coupons at the end."

Near the last item she forgot to take the 50% off one of the quick sale items, so I mentioned it to her. She seemed annoyed, but I KNOW I placed all those pink stickers face up! I was told in no uncertain terms by a cashier (Marcelle) at Maxi 2 years ago that she did not have the time to look on both sides of each item, so if I wanted the discount I had better put the stickers face up. At the time I said I didn't know I had to do her job for her. Nonetheless I want the discount, so I do as I'm told, although I do not EVER go to her cash. (2015 - still don't go to her cash, amazed she still has a job!!)
Anyway, the cashier picks up my Babybel coupon and says, "You don't have one of these."
"Yes, it should have been one of the first things," I replied as I struggled to reach over to the far side of a double conveyer to find the Babybel, all the while fighting against the cart which Darcy was pushing and pulling. She rolled her eyes at me and kind of shifted her weight impatiently, so I said to the cashier, "I put them together right at the beginning."

She says, "No you put these all over on the side like that..." and makes a gesture with my coupons to WHERE SHE PUT THEM!!! I finally found the damn cheese, nearly pulling a muscle in my back. She looked disappointed that I could use the coupon and made a big deal checking the dates on my Superbucks coupons (which were all no more than 1 week old). What bugs me the most is that each of those 5 coupons came from Maxi, so there should have been even less trouble than usual!

After all that I discovered that the Kinder Eggs for the kids scanned at 20 cents more than the price displayed on the shelf, but only after I had paid for everything. I had to go to the courtesy counter (the one where everyone is checking their lotto tickets and returning bottles)  and wait. They refunded one Kinder completely and gave me back the difference on the other one. It seems to me under the price law I should have had both free, but I was done with impolite cashiers and just wanted to leave...I'm happy with one free Kinder Egg!

March 1, 2012
February was a tough month for the McWilby family. Kevin was off work with his hand and I got less calls for subbing than I did in January, and those bills just keep coming in...

We spent less in general this month, because we simply had less $ to spend.

I saved a total of $46.68, of which over $15 was from coupons and the rest were quick-sale items.

I bought 4 packs of TP, which were on sale for $4.99 and I had a total of $6.00 off...so I got one pack for free and little off another one.
Even better on the Vileda Scrunge sponges...they were on sale for $1.49 each and I had a total of $4 in coupons....so totally free!!!  (100% off)

March 22, 2012

I love getting stuff for free

This week I got a 591 mL bottle of Dr. Pepper virtually for free (I paid tax & deposit, so $0.30) with a coupon from Save.ca (100% off)

I got a box of Chapman ice cream sandwiches for 27 cents, with my $5.00 off coupon for joining Chapman's Club online. (95% off)

I also joined Activia's website and I got $20 worth of coupons. I used one to get $2.00 off a 12-pack of yogourts. With the purchase of the 12-pack I could use another coupon for a free 4-pack of Activia desserts! So I paid a little over $2.00 in all for both products!

I also got an 8-pack of Oasis juice boxes for free with a coupon I got inside a box of granola bars. (100% off)

March savings
Quick sale items: $32.69
Superbucks:         $11.65
Coupons:             $36.67
TOTAL :             $81.01!!!!

September Savings
You know it's a tough month when the monthly grocery bill for 4 people only comes to $191.
Our normal month averages $450!

In case you don't know, I am a substitute teacher, therefore I have been unemployed since school ended in June. Unfortunately last year I did not work enough hours to qualify for unemployment insurance this summer. I mowed a few lawns, but $50 a week does not go very far!

On a good note, I am working 2 half days a week at Darcy's pre-school and I've already had one full teaching day.

Thank you Mom for your support in the form of lots of home-cooked meals and care packages!

I saved $30.90 (16 %) with coupons and quick-sale items!

December 3, 2012

Free milk!!!

I won a free 4L bag of milk!!! Thank you Lactancia & Facebook!! (100% off)

Of course with Christmas and all the toys comes the need for batteries. Due my penchant for buying 2nd hand, if it weren't for my keen eye for savings I would spend more on the batteries than the gifts!

2 BIG packs of batteries (AA & AAA) on sale from 18.99 each for 11.99 each plus 2 $0.75 off coupons = 41% SAVINGS!!!

Savings for the year 2012
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Using coupons and buying quick sale items in December I saved $55.90, which brings my savings for the year 2012 to a grand total of $801.64!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's an average of over $66/month

My goal for 2013 is to save a total of $1000.

After reviewing my records I have noted a dramatic decrease in spending on Darcy's clothes. This is due to several factors, including that we simply have a smaller budget. Hand-me downs from my cousin and the buy/sell/trade groups I participate in have a huge role!

Darcy:
2009: $1900
2010: $1200
2011: $650
2012: $350 - WOW!

Cameron:
2008: $143
2009: $832
2010: $420
2011: $508
2012: $110 - WOW!

For Kevin and I together our clothing budget is even less than that, so altogether it is under $1000 (probably less than $600 actually) for a family of 4 per year.

Today's coupons at Maxi

Here's my coupon haul today at Maxi:

I must say the employees at Maxi are less than ordinary, but there were 2 super shoppers today. A man got a cart out for me on my way into the store and as I emptied my cart (in the rain) a lady came and said she would take it!

The Maxi receipt doesn't tell me the reg & sale price and these items weren't in the flyer, so I am estimating the regular price for those bought on sale.

Cat litter (BIG bucket)      Reg: $11.99 - $1.00 coupon = $10.99
Resolve BIG refill bottle   Reg: $3.99 on sale $2.00 - $1.00 coupon = $1.00
Kellog's Special K             Reg. $4.99 on sale $3.99 - $1.00 coupon = $2.99 (x2)

June 8, 2011

Yesterday I paid $0.82 for this at Maxi:

I had 2 coupons for a free product (Triscuit and Yoghurt), the rice cakes were on sale for $1.29, plus I had a $0.47 coupon from Maxi Gas.

YESSSSS!! That's averages out to about $0.28 each or 91% savings!

AWESOME!

Today at Zellers I didn't do quite as well, but still good! Another free Triscuit and a free single serving of Skinny Cow ice cream (not shown). Both coupons from Facebook - thank you Facebook!

$1.00 off cranberry juice
$1.00 of yoghurt
$2.00 off Purex 3-in-1 sheets, which were on sale $1.00 off, so I saved $3!
$0.75 off each toothpaste, which were on sale 2 for $5, so I saved $1.24 each.

For a total of: $12.33 in savings (49%)!!

It would have been better, but the yoghurt didn't scan on sale, which I just noticed now on my bill. I also had trouble with 2 boxed of Shreddies that were supposed to scan at 2 for $5 and scanned at $4.79 each. The cashier fixed it, but technically I should have got them for free. I also just noticed one item for $1.99 was scanned twice, but I only bought 1...grrr. Looking at a previous bill frm 2 weeks ago I also noticed a gift I bought for Darcy was on sale for $4 and I was charged $8.97!!! (If the price tag is still on it, I'm going to bring it to them and see what they will do.) You really have to watch the register! By the way, this is all from Hawkesbury Zellers.

Last week I paid $0.64 for lunch at Maxi: A lunchable at 30% off, a bottle of Coke Zero and a box of Swedish berries (no comments on the nutritional value of my lunch, please!) came to $4.92 - Maxi Gas coupons = $0.64!

May is the first month I actually tracked my savings:
Maxi gas coupons: $10.23
Pink stickers @ Maxi (30 or 50% off): $44.91
Coupons: $43.74
Total: $98.88!!
