My Garden

My garden

2011
Now that the grass is cut, I can sure see the weeding I need to do!

Left: saplings from apple seeds.
4 pots at back on right: tomatoes
Front left: failed garlic clove.
Front middle: empty
Front right: marigold - needs water!

Tea light holder hanging from branch in garden.

Ollie covered in petals after I gave the Spirea another hair cut.

Here's the trimmed spirea. If you saw the post "Spirea Story" you'll see quite a difference between my untrimmed Spirea and this one. I don't care, though, I'd rather have less flowers and stay dry when I walk to the door!  On the right you'll see some aphids and a happy lady bug, which I also found in the Spirea.

My grape vine actually has wee grapes starting! I don't know anything about grapevines...if anyone has any experience with them, please share your advice! I started them onto a trellis last year, and pruned in the fall to control - there was too much for the space I have there. This year it looks good - but I am not sure how to keep it really happy.

Dragonflies!
Front porch. The greenery along the front are pom-poms. They didn't flower very well last summer and we had cut them down the fall before, as we were told to do. Last fall I decided to let them go and see what happens. So far there are lot of flower buds but there are also alot of these:

Many, many of the flower buds are trapped inside 2 leaves, stuck together with cob-webby stuff and a lovely nest inside. I don't know what they are, if they are friend or foe, if they are the reason my shrubs didn't flower last year...again anyone with advice, please share!

Bleeding heart
Update: 2014 it did not come back.

A little friend hiding in there!

Back yard. There's a garden under the tree. The side facing us is mostly wildflowers, but also has a big hosta. In the spring it's full of allium and daffodils. The other side is supposed to be more structured...ha! There's peonies, primroses, hosta, sweet william, columbine, tulips, phlox, phlox, phlox...also a perimeter of lovely small, white star-shaped flowers, a small, variegated tree/shrub, yellow irises...and weeds!  I really need to get my garden books out and identify some of these plants :-)

Detail from the garden below.

I also have this, which smells like citronella.
Not sure what it's called. The bees love it! Geranium?
Update: it is wild geranium.

Garden behind the shed. It has 2 kinds of hostas, bleeding heart, 3 astilbe, i think the tall flowers are phlox, there's something that I think it called Elephant Ear...(that's what it looks like!), a Jack-in-pulpit, a lilly, a few sedum, allium, there's a rose bush inside the arbor, snow-on-the-mountain (hard to control!)
