Giving up Coke Zero (Jan 25th, 2015)

Jan 29, 201 - 4th day So far so good. I had a moment yesterday when I REALLY wanted some, but got past it. I am already sleeping better!

(After hearing from a friend who is a personal trainer): If I had known quitting would have benefits for my joints I would have done it sooner. I have chronic problems in my right knee.

(After comments telling m to drink water/ more water/ only water/ give up all soda/ give up all caffeine, etc): I am going step by step. First the coloured diet soda (I virtually never drink other soda), then the clear, although I am proud to say I haven't had ANY soda for 4 days. I drink a lot of water already. For now, when I want something bubbly I'll drink clear diet soda instead of Coke Zero. I don't smoke, I don't drink, I virtually never eat in restaurants or take-out (almost everything I eat is homemade), I stopped going to hair dresser, I don't even shop anymore. I'm addicted to photography and Coke Zero (maybe couponing too)..so to all telling me to ONLY drink water - gimme a break, I'm not a saint!

I LOVE Coke Zero, when I don't have water, it is (no, WAS) my drink of choice. I know all the bad things about it, but that is addiction, right, being compelled to do something even when you know you shouldn't... All the science in the world would not convince to give it up, I would cut back, but not quit.

My motivation: All it took was my 6 year old daughter saying, "Mommy you shouldn't drink that, it's not good for you." What example was I setting telling her not to drink it because it's not healthy, then sitting down with a glass of it? So simple in the end. She is very proud of me; that is my motivation.

I never really had soft drinks growing up. As a teen I liked Sprite or diet sprite, but no where near an addiction. When Coke Zero came out I was working at the lab and it was easy to get it in the vending machines when I didn't have time to run down to the caf. I got hooked.

I went grocery shopping today and I admit it was hard to walk past that aisle. Then the fridge at the cash was calling out to me...but I resisted!!!

Feb 8:
Just over 2 weeks without a drop of Coke Zero! I have had 3 bad headaches, but the biggest change is sleep. It is great to get proper sleep and feel better, but I am not getting as much done!!!!

(After some people thinking I am going "zero Coke" and thus thinking I drank a lot of Coke Classic, an explaination of "Coke-Zero" a form of diet soda that tastes more like Coke Classic than Diet Coke.): Coke-Zero is zero sugar/zero calories/zero carbs (zero good, too) hence the name.
So, I'm not sure if it will make any difference in my weight, although I have heard that tricking your body into thinking it's ingesting sugar (i.e. Aspartame) may have a negative impact on weight control too.

I quit mainly to set a good example for the kids, but also for my health; because of the chemicals, not for weight-control.

February 21:
I have had one small "single serving" can of Coke Zero in almost one month. Amazing!!! I am so proud of myself, but admit my mouth waters when I see the bottles in the store.

February 23:
Aside rom that one serving of Coke Zero, I have not had ANY diet soda. I have had about 4 glasses of Regular Sprite, so that's only about 1 per week!
